About

The Full Story

The laboratory was founded in 2008 by professor Elena Levtchenko (pediatric nephrologist) and professor Lambertus van den Heuvel (molecular biologist). Since then, numerous PhD, Master and Bachelor students coming from virtually all continents (Europe, Africa, North and South America, Oceania) merited scientific forming in the laboratory and successfully defended their theses.
Our fingerprint is using kidney cells non-invasively isolated from urine to model genetic diseases, drug response, renal development and regeneration.

Our mission is to discover novel mechanisms of genetic kidney diseases and to find new therapeutic options including gene, cell  and individualized drug therapy. We are particularly interested in nephropathic cystinosis and are seeking to cure this disorder.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be a world leader laboratory in the field of pediatric nephrology by creating a cooperative, friendly and scientifically challenging scientific research environment. Members of the lab are expected to take full responsibility for completing their own research projects, but also for helping colleagues in performing highly demanding experiments, analyzing and presenting data with care and honesty.
